Android-powered Nexus S now on Vodafone (with Gingerbread)

Vodafone has announced the immediate availability of the Samsung Nexus S handset, which is the first in Australia to run Android 2.3 "Gingerbread".

Vodafone announced back in February that it will be the first carrier to offer the Nexus S - often dubbed as an "iPhone killer" - nevertheless did not say when.

Vodafone Hutchison Australia marketing director, John Casey, as the first operator to launch the Nexus S, Vodafone can offer clients "the fastest version of Android but".

Android 2.3 Gingerbread was released late last year and features support for larger screen sizes than smartphones, a SIP stack for VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), improved copy and paste of text, and native support for Wi-Fi hotspots.

Near Field Communications support as well arrives with Gingerbread and a new download manager handles long-running downloads better after all of a drop out. Samsung Electronics Australia vice president for telecommunications Tyler McGee said the Nexus S is the first Samsung-Google co-developed device to enter the Australian market.
