Bev Shillito
Each Friday, the Dayton Business Journal speaks with a Dayton-area lawyer and posts a blog featuring his or her thoughts on topics in the law industry. This week, we spoke with Bev Shillito, a partner with Sebaly, Shillito and Dyer, in downtown Dayton. Shillito leads the firm's health care law practice. Here are her thoughts on health care law, changes at her firm and social media in the law industry:
A: A good health care attorney has spent time with physicians and understands the demands and challenges they face on a daily basis. As healers, physicians are challenged to stay abreast with new medications, treatments, protocols and emerging technologies to benefit their patients. They are as well business managers - running a practice, complying with local, state and federal requirements, staffing a practice, maintaining quality control, etc. Today's physicians are often business owners and community leaders. As an effective health care attorney, it is essential to understand the interplay, and often complex relationships, between physicians, hospitals, ancillary providers, staff, patients and vendors.
A: Last year we significantly invested in new technologies, including VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and enhancements to our cutting-edge document management system. We as well opened an office in West Chester.
A: This year we are investing additional resources in our integrative practices. We have a few surprises up our sleeve, particularly with respect to expanding our practice areas. We are as well looking at enhancements to our VOIP communication system in an effort to strengthen our mobility and flexibility. Our goal is for all devices to communicate seamlessly in real time from any location.
