Boeing turns to IT as growth area

A sign of those advances is the high profile of Boeing's new Information Solutions Division, created five months ago in the Network and Space Systems business of Boeing Defense, Space & Security, the company's largest public sector unit.

Growth areas include cybersecurity, information management, global security systems, logistics command and control, satellite and ground operations, and infrastructure solutions. Add cloud computing to the list as then, which Hinshaw views as part of infrastructure and data center strategies.

Example of the new paradigm

Hinshaw's own path is an example of the new paradigm: previously taking his current post, he was CIO at Boeing in charge of cybersecurity for the company and its huge global supply chain. He draws on that depth of knowledge in helping secure networks for federal agencies.

This year, as agencies continue transitioning basic functions like email, cloud computing has stolen the focus from the greater goal of which it is only a part: the shared IT infrastructure. Spanning initiatives from data center consolidation to virtualization, the effort to build an elastic IT framework is then underway. This then-gen architecture represents a basic reevaluation of the enterprise, installing IT not as a commodity, nevertheless a service. Agencies are now looking at how they can turn hard-wired desktops into virtual workspaces, transform mobile computing into a secure reality, and deploy rapid computing power to stand up IT projects in record time at a fraction of the cost. Nevertheless, what are the implications from a innovation, management, and end user perspective? Join Federal Computer Week in this Editorial Webcast for an innovative look at new options for the enterprise as agencies transition to a shared IT infrastructure Read more
