Broadband speeds doubled in NBN trials

TOWNSVILLE triallists of the National Broadband Network have already achieved speeds near double that possible pursuant to this agreement ADSL2 with the network but to reach full capacity.

North Queensland-based Internet Solutions has been working with commercial and residential clients within the Mundingburra/ Aitkenvale trial site since July 12 and currently has 11 clients connected to the network.

Customers are restricted to speeds up to 20 megabits per second download and 1 Mbps upload, depending on their computer hardware, which founder Roger King says are unachievable pursuant to this agreement the current best available ADSL2+ network in Townsville.

The Voice over Internet Protocol

Mr King said many of their triallists were using the Voice over Internet Protocol, which had been working then, and was saving them on their regular phone rental.

``The business running more efficiently and more cost effectively. They've got savings with voice and data and the speeds they're getting. There's no negatives in regard to that at all.''

Cost wise, Mr King said Townsville clients would experience little difference to those in metro areas, during getting better value for money than current internet plans.

The whole scenario

``Actually if you weigh up the whole scenario, NBN users will probably find it cheaper as you won't have the requirement for a phone line rental either.''

Internet Solutions is one of two Townsville internet service providers signed up with wholesale provider Nextgen Networks, with North Queensland Telecom as well working with clients in the trial area.

``The NBN will significantly support growth and create business opportunities for Townsville with its diverse regional economy,'' he said.
