TranSwitch Corp., a Shelton-based provider of semiconductor technology for the voice, data and video networks, has received orders from a Chinese telecommunications equipment manufacturer for its Atlanta 80 processor for use in its WiMAX terminals in Asia and Europe. According to a recent ABI Research report, 164 mobile WiMAX networks, a broadband alternative for Internet access with greater range than Wi-Fi, were in trial or operation at the end of 2009. Last year, Korea's broadband operator, SK Broadband, deployed more than 1 million VoIP terminals based on TranSwitch's Atlanta processor. Other service providers also are conducting trials of Atlanta 80-based equipment.

TABS Group Inc., a Shelton-based marketing research and consulting company, has released its latest estimate of the size of the vitamin, minerals and supplements market in the United States, discovering that the market has surged by about 20 percent since the last time an estimate was done in January 2008. But TABS determined the market is an $11 billion business, less than the $20-plus billion market cited by other industry sources. The market growth was driven almost entirely by category users adding additional product types to their portfolio. Wal-Mart is the leading retailer vitamin, minerals and supplements with 16 percent of sales.
