Cloud 'comes of age' for retail Point of Sale
Many retailers fear that security of data may be jeopardised along these lines. Now, I’d argue that cloud computing provides the safest way of managing sensitive till information in globally secure data centres, where security is paramount.
Where the cloud SaaS model wins is that it helps the right people access data on purpose. It is an enabling and empowering innovation, which allows people to do their jobs. The research from DigiPoS is as well resilient; with full local backup functionality should there be any network downtime or reliability issues.
We are currently working with a number of retailers to build a model where we can migrate a SaaS solution either throughout the entire organisation or even down to one store at a time. Furthermore, the SaaS model can be implemented to run in parallel with the current solution deployed, in doing so reducing risk. An example of this would be that staff want to turn on a till that looks familiar and similar to the existing model. We can make the front end, or interface, look as it always has done – we can as well tailor what resides at local level, and undertake a deployment in an evolutionary way. The purpose is to migrate the PoS system without jeopardising the business, and with cloud computing this has become possible.
