Cloud Hype Means People Understand What We Do
To the cloud! Three little words have allowed everyone I know to in fact know what I do for a living, nevertheless I'm not convinced in other words such a good thing. All of my careerI have worked in telecommunications and research and pretty much got used to the fact that at cocktail parties and family events no one would ever understand what Idid for living and as a matter of fact couldn't even pretend to be interested.
The time companies like Microsoft
But at the time companies like Microsoft, IBM, and Cisco started using their amazing marketing machines to promote their latest technologies, applications, and services to the masses.Cisco telepresence is mentioned on the hottest TV shows, commercials talk about "the human network", IBM promotes "a smarter plant", and Microsoft takes people "to the cloud".With big companies taking their wares to the masses, even when a lot of these technologies are aimed at large enterprises - the hype around the hottest research trendsincreases and your average person nevertheless knows what virtualization, cloud computing, and conferencing and collaboration are and what it can do.
Getting the word and benefits of new research out is great. And it helps the whole industry when companies promote emerging solutions, but at times I however missthe anonymity associated with no one having a clue what a research analyst does. However for the future of telecommunications and high tech bring on the hype! And hopefully all these fancy commercials will as well increase actual adoption so the hype is not just hype yet reality.
If you haven't heard, the value of a minute of voice time on AT&T's network just tanked, until further notice for iPhone users, with last week's release of Viber, a new free VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) app just released on the iTunes App Store.
