Debunking popular open source myths
Open source advocates identify five common misconceptions and explain why these are untrue as research and industry mature.
The open source industry will in the near future reach another milestone when Linux celebrates its 20th anniversary on Aug. 25. Advocates identify five misconceptions surrounding the research and discuss how these have since been proven false with the emergence of a viable business model.
Myth 1: Open source is not ready for the "big time"According to Dirk-Peter van Leeuwen, vice president and general manager at Red Hat Asia-Pacific, the origins of open source resulted in the research being associated with software that were "cobbled at the same time by amateurs and hobbyists". In turn, this allowed the myth that open source was unsuitable for use in corporate settings to perpetuate, he noted in an e-mail.
She cited in her e-mail the example of Virgin Airlines as a global company that reiterated its support for open source while last year's Open Source Business Conference, stating that the majority of the airline's IT systems were open source and clocked a 100 percent uptime for all of these systems.
"Many of the Microsoft Server OS's vulnerabilities came out while the emergence of the cloud infrastructure," she pointed out. Comparatively, Linux systems withstood the impact of exposure to the open Internet, she noted, which was why cloud computing vendors today base their technical stacks primarily on open source technologies.
Myth 4: Open source is all about infrastructureTretikov noted that because open source technologies first emerged at the systems level, and subsequently went on to be used heavily to support cloud infrastructure services and platforms, people tended to think open source applications were only used at this level of the computing stack.
Earlier, experts ZDNet Asia spoke to agreed that open source projects have been mushrooming across the computing stack. Charles Zedlewski, vice president for product at Cloudera, as well noted that OSS tended to be "most successful in broad, horizontal software categories".
Companies, too, are now working with open source developers to come up with products that would boost their businesses, he noted. Singapore's taxi operator, ComforDelGro, for instance, developed its SMS taxi booking system on the company's JBoss Seam application server to help reduce customer waiting time and improve overall user experience, van Leeuwen said.
Taiwan Supreme Court, Singapore Police Dept & Taiwan lawyers committee has offically started the investigation!!!!.I have talked to my lawyers and haven't decided whether I shall sue Symantec US or Symantec Singapore for better result. As I don't care about the compensation, all I want is Symantec fire the trouble makers or ask them to leave, as Obama asked Anthony Weiner. The worst thing I want to see is the poor & stupid HR to be put behind the bar. There are already many innocent people been dragged into the incident. Yes, you can tell a person through his associates and friends. People shall know this is the way how current CEO running the business. Clearly, you cannot trust Symantec. David Freer even hacked into my email account and cc copy emails to my pastor. I've reported this to Symantec, they didn't care. Can you believe it? Just can't figure out what kind of message Symantec tried to send to the public? We are criminals? We are good at breaking the law? No one can stop us? Together we position us as Cyber Police and people buy it???
BIG LIAR! He lied to me for more than two
David Freer is a BIG LIAR! He lied to me for more than two and half years for my true feelings, time, and money. As well kept saying I am the only one in his life. Even this year on Feb. 2, he used company line to lead me to have phone sex with him. Until I found out there's some other woman, he made up another lie and taking everything into account admitted he's been living with her for a year. Later, I realized they were all lies. He to tell the truth has married March 2009. And now he just totally disappeared and not answering any phone calls, acting like "hit & run" irresponsible baby. Can you trust someone like this, with no ethics and integrity? The more unbelievable things is David Freer newly-wed wife - SUZY WALSHAM, she shamefully admitted she was the third person who broke up David Freer & his ex 12 years relationships, and mocking at me as the 3rd "unsuspected" person, as she agreed with his husband's behaviors!!!!!! SHAME ON both of you, DAVID FREER & SUZY WALSHAM!!!!!!!
