Fake telecom operator sentenced to six months

Chennai, Oct 26 (PTI) A person accused of running an illegal telecom set-up was sentenced to six months of imprisonment by a special CBI Court here."The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Egmore has convicted Mohammed Farook Rahman, a private person, for running an illegal telecom set-up at Purasawakkam High Road and sentenced him to undergo six months imprisonment with fine of Rs 9,050," a CBI spokesperson said.The incoming ISD calls were received through Internet using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) technology and the voice calls were delivered through local telephones with a false caller line identification."He obtained internet connection in a fictitious name.He was running the telephone exchange in violation of Indian Telegraph Act causing wrongful loss to the tune of Rs 33.48 lakh to the government by way of evasion of prescribed charges on the ISD calls," he said.
