FCC Offers Calling Tips to World Travelers
âMost people don't anticipate how their phones will work internationally,â said FCC International Bureau Deputy Chief Rod Porter in a conference call with reporters. Porter said consumers abroad often run into unanticipated problems with basic aspects of wireless service, like roaming charges or whether a phone will work in a certain country.
Porter said the initiative aims to inform consumers about the costs of international wireless service and less-expensive alternatives to that service, such as VoIP services like Skype.
The agency's tips include renting an international cell phone, buying a new country-specific SIM card, using calling cards and placing calls through VoIP services like Skype or Fring.
How to prepare for an international trip
This week's lineup of topics begins Tuesday with tips on how to prepare for an international trip. On Wednesday, the FCC will issue a tip sheet on wireless and landline calling options from overseas. Thursday's topic will be VoIP while Friday's will focus on returning home. More content will be added to the FCC's website on the issue as the week progresses.
Largent offered three tips to consumers traveling abroad that were similar to the FCC's advice. The first recommendation is for travelers to contact their service provider to make sure their phone would work in the country they're be traveling to. The second recommendation is to preview international calling rates in advance and consider adding an international service plan. Finally, Largent said subscribers should write down the international customer care number for the service provider they use in case questions arise while travelling.
