Gen Y values Facebook over food
Not only that, nevertheless 61% say they spend up to four hours a day checking Facebook on their mobile with females being the biggest culprits. The independent Australia-wide study, carried out in conjunction with the launch of the new INQ Cloud Touch smartphone, uncovered some fascinating facts about the extent to which we now rely on smartphones. While near two thirds of Aussies admit to Facebook 'stalking' and regularly using their smartphone to check social media sites and see what friends have been up to, 20% confess to not having the time to catch up with friends in person. Nearly one in ten say they prefer to use Facebook to find a new boyfriend or girlfriend or rather than the age old way of getting out and meeting new people and nearly two thirds of Gen Y said they'd use Facebook to check out a potential love interest earlier bothering to take the time to meet them in person. The same survey found:· More than half of respondents said leaving our mobile phone at home would ruin their day and of these, over 10% would drop whatever they were doing to rush home and collect it.· One in four males reckon they could live without their smartphone versus just 16% of females.· One third of respondents have been so consumed by checking friends' updates on their smartphones, they've walked into someone/thing on the street, got lost and even boarded the wrong bus or train.· When it comes to status symbols, nearly a quarter say the latest smartphone is the most important, ahead of handbags and jewellery, and beaten only by clothes"The technology reveals some interesting findings about how smartphones are drastically changing the way we connect with friends, particularly via social media," comments Marketing Manager at INQ, Andrew Lee-Joe. "Being able to access social networking sites like Facebook during on the move has become a vital part of the social lives of young Australians.""The new INQ Cloud Touch is revolutionary in that it answers this demand, placing Facebook to the letter in the palm of users' hands. By appearing live in the homescreen it provides time-poor Aussies with quick and easy access to friends and activities via pictures, videos and status updates. Given Australians love for social media, and fast adoption of mobile research, the phone provides the perfect fit for our busy lifestyles."

The idea of internet and mobile phone addiction is nothing new. Diana James of QUT said in 2006, "Mobile phone addiction is going to surpass internet addiction because meanwhile you can walk away from your computer ... our dependency on mobiles means most people are never without them."
