Google Nexus S vs Samsung Galaxy S

The hottest Android in town is the Google Nexus S, however how does it compare to our top smartphone of 2010, the Samsung Galaxy S? Read on to find out.

The Google Nexus One is as well slightly heavier

The Google Nexus One is as well slightly heavier, now remains ridiculously light at 129g. To put this heft into context, the rival HTC Desire HD weighs a whopping 164g, and after all isn’t considered a porker. One other alteration you might not be able to see in photos of the Google Nexus S is its curved screen. It’s designed to reduce reflections and make the phone more comfortable to hold against your face, yet it’s a minor win over the classic Samsung Galaxy S

We expected more of a photographic boost in the Google Nexus S if we’re honest - it features a 5-megapixel sensor, just like the Samsung Galaxy S and Google Nexus One, a “last-gen” phone. This megapixel count is a little disappointing when rivals like the HTC Desire HD pack 8-megapixel sensors and the image quality doesn’t match the stellar 5-meg iPhone 4, now in a one-on-one battle against the Samsung Galaxy S, the Nexus S takes another victory.

The Samsung Galaxy S gives you 8GB of internal storage during the newer Google Nexus S doubles that figure with 16GB. An easy win for the Google Android phone? Not by a long shot.

The Google Nexus S is the first significant Android phone to leave out one core feature of the Android experience, microSD support. Google seems to be suffering from Apple ‘n’ Microsoft envy, and it’s not something we like to see. Being able to slot in another memory card as you please is a boon, and we’d trade it in for the Google Nexus S’s extra memory any day, especially when an 8GB microSD card can be yours for around a tenner.

The Google Nexus S arrived at an odd time

The Google Nexus S arrived at an odd time, just earlier the introduction of dual-core CPUs to the smartphone scene. As such, it uses the same Hummingbird CPU as the Samsung Galaxy S. This is a Cortex A8 processor running at a 1GHz clock speed. It may sound less powerful than the dual-core beauties that will hit shelves in the coming months, nevertheless it’s easily powerful enough to keep Android running like greased lightning.

You can’t argue with a Super AMOLED screen, we say. They’re thoroughly beautiful - the only rival that comes close to competing is the Apple iPhone 4’s Retina display screen.

The most important feature of the Google Nexus S

Perhaps the most important feature of the Google Nexus S, at least for the time being, is its software. It was the first phone to feature Android 2.3, and at that time of writing is the only phone to rock the latest version of the Android OS. The Samsung Galaxy S currently runs Android 2.2, and a 2.3 update hasn’t been confirmed.

The Google Nexus S as well loses the custom interface of the Samsung Galaxy S. Though Samsung’s UI comes with a handful of neat widgets, it doesn’t bring much of significance to the tablet that you can’t nab for free from the Android Market.
