Google Voice Desktop software leaks to Techcrunch
The application has reportedly been tested in-house most of this year, but last month, word hit the Internet that Google was pulling the software on hold as part of the fulfillment of Google’s own founders belief that the company should not be working on software that doesn’t run in browser. It seems, however, that the Google Voice desktop application has avoided getting the axe.

The demo on Techcrunch shows the basic functionality. It doesn’t do more than make voice calls, and it doesn’t really look all that great design-wise (although a big step up from the aesthetic monstrosity of the Skype application). Incoming and outgoing calls are both supported, and the desktop app also seems to support another phone line in the Google Voice settings.
Overall, given how great the Google Voice service is, it looks like this could be a legitimate challenger to the VoIP throne… that is, if Google ever rolls the service out internationally.
