
Government Cloud Computing on Forbes?
I had the same question a couple of weeks ago when Bruce Upbin’s invitation showed up in my inbox. Though Forbes has always been an important source of business information, the Federal government seemed out of place. Government cloud computing, but, is changing this image fast.
Long known for it’s glacial speed and risk avoidance culture, the US Federal Government is moving with surprising speed into the brave new world of cloud computing. With budget language, executive directives and the Federal Cloud Computing Strategy, the federal government is re-thinking its information innovation infrastructure, planning to shift $20B annually “to the cloud”. This aggressive transformation will be accomplished by virtualizing data centers, consolidating IT operations, and ultimately adopting a cloud-computing business model. Surprising to many, the government seems to be adopting this new model much faster that many commercial industries.
The Washington Beltway crowd
While these cloud-based resources are old hat for the Washington Beltway crowd, my travels have helped me realize how little is known about this important transformation. The Federal CIO Vivek Kundra, as a matter of fact, released a report of over 30 illustrative case studies of how cloud computing is changing the nature of government IT.

My formal education includes MSEE, MA National Security & Strategic Studies and a BS Aerospace Engineering. I as well graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1979, retiring from the US Navy in 1994, earning specialties in Space Systems Engineering, Airborne Logistics and Airborne Command and Control. I as well served with the National Reconnaissance Office, Operational Support Office, providing tactical support to Navy and Marine Corps forces worldwide.
