U.K. retailer MobilesPlease said in a blog post that Windows Phone 7 accounted for just 3% of smartphone sales and below 2% of overall sales through MobilesPlease.co.uk and its network of mobile phone partner sites. Android devices reportedly outsold Windows Phone 7 devices by 15 to 1 and Symbian 3 handsets by 3 to 1.

It was in October that the software giant unveiled nine new smartphone handsets with Windows Phone 7 platform. Powered with Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor, the devices had many similarities with iPhone touch and promised to redefine gaming and entertainment experience. It included features such as customizable start screen, Xbox LIVE, Windows Live, Bing, Zune music and MS office.

At that time market analysts had said that the move was is an opportunity for Microsoft to reinvigorate its falling smartphone business share, which was only 5% then compared to the 9% share enjoyed last year.
