HP updates dependency mapping software

The new feature announced Monday is what HP calls a collector portal, a Web interface that lists the applications and dependencies the software has uncovered. Customers at the time manually enter which departments and services are using which applications.

Dependency mapping has become more important as clients undertake virtualization and cloud computing projects, which increase complexity and make it easier to overlook dependencies, Augustine said. "We see a lot of clients buying our [DDMA] product exactly for a data center transformation project," he said.

HP releases DDMA updates every three to four months. In June it released Content Pack 9, which added the ability to discover Microsoft Exchange 2010 and IBM AS400 servers, and enhancements for IBM mainframes and Windows PowerShell.

The dependence on email as an attachment transport mechanism has created significant problems. Because 98% of email traffic consists of attachments, performance of email systems suffers and is manifested by slower message delivery and greater susceptibility to downtime. Other problems caused by the reliance on email for attachment transport include higher costs for storage and other infrastructure, additional IT labor devoted to managing the email infrastructure, an inability to track accurately if and how files flow through the email system, longer backup windows, longer restore times afterwards server crashes, and an overall lack of control over much of the content that flows through email. This whitepaper highlights how organizations can solve their attachment management problems during imposing little or no change on the way that users work and increasing IT's visibility into the process for compliance purposes -- inexpensively and at reduced corporate risk.

This whitepaper illustrates how, by using YouSendit and replacing FTP, Cisco has dramatically cut video administration costs by 90% . The Flip video file delivery process for Cisco Networking Academy's global operations is now much simpler, less costly and more efficient.
