A 42 percent increase in session border controllers has boosted the carrier Voice over Internet Protocol market in 2010, according to Infonetics Technology’s fourth quarter 2010 "Service Provider VoIP Equipment and Subscribers" market share and forecast report.
The year 2010
The year 2010 was fantastic for SBCs as they ended the year with a significant revenue increase of 42 percent over 2009 due to increase in IP interconnectivity in fixed and mobile networks, growth in the number of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) subscribers, and SIP trunking, the report said.
"The shift to IP continues, as reflected in the continued rise of SBCs and the decline in trunk media gateways in 2010," said Diane Myers, directing analyst for VoIP and IMS at Infonetics Technology.
According to the report, the service provider VoIP equipment market, including trunk media gateways, SBCs, media servers, soft switches, and voice application servers, grew 14.5 percent to $592 million in 4Q10 over 3Q10.
Asia Pacific is the only region to record year-over-year revenue growth in 2010 for service provider VoIP equipment, up 24 percent over the previous year, the report said.
The overall carrier VoIP equipment market
GENBAND continues to lead the overall carrier VoIP equipment market, increasing its worldwide revenue lead to 23 percent in 4Q10.
In March 2010, Synergy Innovation Group published market shares of carrier VoIP for the fourth quarter of 2009 and found that the worldwide market for carrier VoIP crossed $10 billion. Now, the market fell 18 percent year over year.
