Juniper Networks Powers Tenaga Nasional's New MPLS Backbone
Juniper Networks today announced that Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Southeast Asia's largest power utility, has migrated corporate and non-real time operational data traffic to the first phase of a new IP/MPLS backbone based on Juniper Networks® MX Series Universal Edge Routers running the Junos® operating system. Deployment of the MX480 and MX240 routers as part of a total solution provides Tenaga with a secure and reliable high-performance network that enables it to reduce operational costs and introduce new converged IP applications.
The implementation of the new IP/MPLS backbone
Before the implementation of the new IP/MPLS backbone, Tenaga used a frame relay service to carry applications just as telemetering, ERP, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) telephony, Internet access, customer information and billing, email and video conferencing. Real-time point-to-point traffic for critical operational applications -- just as teleprotection, operational voice and supervisory control and data acquisition -- is carried over the company's own SDH/optical fiber infrastructure.
Tenaga is now using Ethernet-over-SDH as the transport for its new IP/MPLS backbone, enabling it to carry all operational and corporate traffic over its own infrastructure. Replacing the aging frame relay system with IP/MPLS research is in line with the company's Telecommunication Network Development Plan to provide an efficient and secure integrated network to support new services and meet users' increasing quality-of-service requirements.
"We worked with our partners to come up with a complete solution to achieve Tenaga Nasional's goal of converging all non-real time data traffic onto an IP network, leveraging its existing SDH infrastructure, during also ensuring stringent levels of security and reliability required by an electricity utility," said Mike Marcellin, vice president, product marketing and business strategy, Platform Systems Group, Juniper Networks. "Tenaga now has a carrier-grade IP/MPLS foundation that will be expanded in phases to support service technology across the enterprise."
Juniper Networks® MX480 routers have been deployed to form the core of Tenaga's new MPLS network during MX240 routers have been placed at the provider network edge, supporting links to the company's data centers and offices. Tenaga is leveraging powerful traffic segmentation and virtualization features within the Juniper Networks MPLS environment -- as then as comprehensive security and QoS implementations -- to separate, manage and protect its different traffic streams.
With Junos® OS running as a single, consistent operating environment across the new infrastructure, Tenaga can reduce operational cost by streamlining network administration processes. Junos OS has a highly modular architecture that prevents isolated failures from bringing down an entire system. The advanced service availability and resiliency features of the Junos operating system and the MX Series -- including in-service software upgrades and fail-over scenarios with fast reroute -- were key factors Tenaga's decision to select the Juniper Networks MPLS solution.
