Latest Skype Beta Makes Facebook a Friend With Benefits
If you thought Facebook and Skype were already cozy, wait until you see what they're up to now. The latest beta version of Skype desktop for Windows extends the VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service's already deep social networking integration, according to Skype's blog.
In today's latest release, Skype for Windows 5.5 beta, users can "like" things, comment on friends' statuses, and message Facebook friends without ever logging into Facebook. There's even a dedicated Facebook contacts tab rolled into the VoIP softwareideal for heavily invested Facebookers.
Before v.5.5 beta, users could already place voice calls and send SMS messages to Facebook friends via their profile contact information and browse news feeds without leaving Skype. The latest version simply tightens integration.
Considering Microsoft's successful acquisition of Skype, the tighter ties ought not come as a surprise. The software giant has moved aggressively towards the social networking site, particularly in its Web search business.
Last month we reported that Microsoft was expanding Facebook use in its Bing search engine, adding "likes," Facebook recommendations, and even small photosthe Facebook "thumbs up" iconand notes to search results. It makes sense that, considering Microsoft's investment in the social networking site, they would roll the same kind of innovation into other products, including, now, Skype.
