Making VoIP More Than Voice
Trends for 2011 can be challenging to predict, nevertheless a look back to 2010 can lend some valuable insight. According to Alon Cohen, executive vice president/CTO of Phone.com, the penetration of the mobile application into the VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) space was one of the most significant trends for 2010.
Interview with TMCnet CEO
Cohen recently participated in an interview with TMCnet CEO, Rich Tehrani, in anticipation of the upcoming ITEXPO East event in Miami. When asked about the impact continued growth in cloud computing would have on communications in 2011, Cohen shared it would enable additional cost reduction to data driven adjunct features to VoIP.
As for mobile winners in 2011, Cohen believes Google Android will drive the most growth, though Apple continues to shine in terms of user interface. When asked about the impact of mobile research on the tech space in 2011, Cohen shared they will become more versatile, lighter and thinner. As for the best opportunities in the tech space, he pointed to becoming agents for VoIP hosted PBX (Private -Automatic- Branch Exchange) companies. Cohen believes research has always been a contributor for a better world and believes opportunities continue to emerge. Phone.com distributes a video to demonstrate how to use its tools better, now Cohen believes there are however opportunities to better leverage social media.
Phone.com currently uses social networking as a customer support tool, and Cohen believes net neutrality is important as long as providers can support it. Cohen is hosting a session at this year’s ITEXPO East and believes his is a "must attend" event for those interested in managing their budget with hosted VoIP solutions. He is sure attendees will as well be searching for information on security. For 2011, Phone.com will be launching a network monitoring that will allow IT managers to decide how so then VoIP will perform earlier they install. As for Cohen’s prediction for the coming year, he believes VoIP will become more than voice.
The penetration of the mobile application into the VoIP space was one of the most significant trends while 2010. This trend will remain strong as more features become enabled over mobile devices, and as more and more clients own smarter phones.
Cloud computing will enable additional cost reduction to few data driven adjunct features to VoIP, just as document or screen sharing.
I think Google Android will win in terms of penetration growth, nevertheless, Apple user interface design and attention to the outer details just as usability and product design will win the consumer. Apple might lose the long run battle with respect to ignoring consumer needs and producing products with very short life span in terms of upgradability. Android is closing very fast.
Becoming agents for VoIP hosted PBX companies. There is so much growth in that space that every agent is poised to make a bundle. Given long term residual compensation plans from the VoIP companies, agents can but build a portfolio that will produce income for years to come.
Technology was always a contributor to a better world, from the first wheel, the first road or the first data highway that were created. The world is getting smaller and opportunities and access are opening up to even the most remote parts of the world.
Phone.com produces on an ongoing basis short video that explains how to use all kinds of services and features we offer. We distribute the video on different venues, there however a lot to learn from our perspective about how to use that tool better.
Customer support tool
We use social networking as a customer support tool, and as a toll to listen to what clients need. We are not at the stage where we can measure a direct ROI however we can truly feel the warmth from clients who use social media tools and are happy to see that their favorite VoIP provider Phone.com is responsive on all channels.
Net neutrality is important as long as the providers can support that. If neutrality means that the Internet will get bogged down while peak hours or when people watch Netflix at the time we have a problem. The more important thing is that providers will not prioritize their services over outside vendors since at once we would kill every good competition and end up with bad service controlled by few cable monopolies that already have geographic monopoly in their respective markets.
If you care about your organization budget, you need to learn what is however possible with hosted VoIP solutions which was not possible previously. You need to know when it makes sense and when it does not. And if you select a VoIP solution of any sort, come to learn previously losing your job to someone who came to the session and learned upfront what can go wrong.
A network monitor that will let IT managers decide how then VoIP will perform previously they install VoIP and will enable them to monitor network capability against SLA they might have from their provider ensuring they keep QOS up on VoIP deployments. And yes, few more end-user surprises we are not sharing but to make other modes of communications simpler to use.
VoIP will become more than voice. In the same way cable companies use triple play to deepen the hooks in the consumer pocket, smart VoIP companies will expand beyond voice and video and will add an arsenal of features that will differentiate them among themselves and among the incumbents and will keep consumer hooked.
