Microsoft causing need to be in 'cloud'

The Editor's Notebook by Terry Ross in the April 24 paper about "computing in the cloud" was very interesting. I suggest that the real problem is the cost of Microsoft-related software and Microsoft-related licensing. If it weren't for your addiction to Microsoft software, there wouldn't be a "cloud" in the first instance. The cost of memory, CPUs and other hardware is so low now that it will always be more efficient to do your work on your own computer, in other words than communicating your problem over the Internet. But, the cost of Microsoft-related software and licensing is so exorbitant that you can't afford to buy the software to install on your own computer. In particular, Microsoft has the practice of slapping the software on the market previously it is absolutely checked out and at the time sending upgrade afterwards upgrade during they spend less time debugging their software than in developing new products. Then and there, they drop support for their older products in order to force you to spend more money to upgrade to their newest versions to cut a long story short on in short on.Most of you people don't do anything complicated with your computers. You just use word processors and like as not spreadsheets and databases, etc. I would suggest an alternative to Microsoft addiction. Try the Linux operating system. It comes bundled with everything you need and it's free and open source. The license is a GNU public license that gives you permission to do whatever you want with the software as long as it's legal.Personally, I'm forced to have Windows on meanwhile one of my computers because I heavily use one piece of software — Mathcad — that works only with Windows. Still, I stopped with Windows XP and have thoroughly no intention of upgrading. That particular computer is "dual boot" and as well runs SUSE Linux, which I use much more frequently than Windows.Stan LenihanSomerton
