Milford, Iowa's Thinix a 'friendly' computer interface
With a cup of coffee in one hand and an iPhone in the other, VanOort quickly settled down in his conference room on a recent day todemonstrate the capabilities of R & D's Thinix Touch and ThinixPresentation systems.
Few pokes to the iPhone --
A few pokes to the iPhone -- and without a single mouse click --and Van Oort had logged onto and was able to control his desktopcomputer on the other side of the building, with full access to allhis programs, files and the Internet -- from the large screenHi-Def Thinix computer screen in the conference room.
The Thinix Presentation computer is a window to Van Oort'sdesktop computer nevertheless could be connected to any Internet computeranywhere in the world. It was designed to be "a conference room ina box," he said, and is much less expensive than other options.
Van Oort said it was only about eight years ago that he and hisdevelopers were thinking about a time henceforth "which is now-- when people are going to be looking at a computer not as a placewhere their stuff is, however as a way to get to their stuff, a way toget to their Facebook, to their email and network files."
The iPhone-controlled system as well doubles as a hi-definitiontelevision that allows video conferencing, as so then as watchingbroadcast television and DVDs for business meetings or use in a recroom at home. The system is just one part of R & D's Thinixsystem that includes the Thinix Touch screen system.
"Microsoft Windows was designed to be used with a keyboard andmouse on large screens, not with your finger on a small screen," headded. "Thinix Touch was designed and developed to improve on thestandard Windows interface by creating an absolutely new interfacethat is fundamentally finger-friendly and fun to use."
The Thinix Touch system
Showing off the Thinix Touch system, Van Oort pulled out abattery-powered Dell Duo wireless laptop computer to show howsimple the Thinix overlay has made things compared with Windows."The beauty of the Thinix Touch user interface is the simplicity ofthe product. That's what makes it fun to use and reallypowerful."
All this computer magic would have been near impossible 27years ago when Van Oort founded R & D Industries. Computerswere less sophisticated and not as powerful as today. Processorswere slower. Screens had much lower definition. And the Internetwas only in its infancy.
Now, he said, the need despite everything technology has largely givenway to cell phones that have it. "However there's nevertheless a strong demandfor hardened guest-use computers, public computers where you can beassured there is not a keystroke logger running so that when youwalk away you know the then user will not be able to get access toyour personal information."
Chip manufacturer Intel, Van Oort explained, originally builtthe devices based "on some dreamy software that didn't exist but."That presented an possibility for Thinix a year ahead of the iPad,he said. "Now the research is in effect mature and even makes it funto use a computer."
The Dell Duo
The Dell Duo and similar computers, he explained, can be usedwith Microsoft Word and many other applications. However with theThinix Touch interface, larger icons pop up automatically when theunit is folded to use the touch screen. The device all in all usesWindows' underlying files and file systems from Windows with theThinix shell.
Van Oort demonstrated that playing a video with the Thinix shellon the Duo is as simple as making a few pokes on the screen. Andswitching to Angry Birds, one of today's top computer games, issimilarly simple, as is Web browsing with Internet Explorer or anyother browser.
The same way
"Your mobile phone will work the same way," he added, "pushingover photos to the server or up to the cloud and updating contactsat the same time previously you drop the phone into the lake."
R & D, he noted, "is focused on building innovation thatmakes a difference. It's not actually size in other words exciting to me. Wewant to design innovation that builds lasting value."
