Analysis of the countrys competitive environment

This exclusive report then provides you with an analysis of the countrys competitive environment, analyzing the fixed, mobile and Internet markets in terms of players, number of subscribers, market share. It also covers the trends and key events in each sector.

The fixed telephony growth curve in Brazil clearly shows that this market reached maturity in 2002. The number of fixed subscribers stagnated over the last 5 years with an average growth rate of 1.0%. Fixed subscriber growth continued to follow this trend in 2009, with an increase of 0.9%. This maturity is caused firstly by the fact that most operators have already reached the regulators service objectives, which means they have no obligation to install additional fixed lines and secondly by the ever-growing popularity of mobile and VoIP services.

Industry observers agree that 2010 should see continued growth in cellular and broadband services, albeit at a lower rate than observed in the last 5 years. The number of mobile subscribers is therefore expected to increase from 174.0 million at the end of 2009 to 190.5 million in 2010, representing a growth of 9.5%. At the end of 2009, mobile customers represented 80.7% of all telephone connections in the country and mobile penetration stood at 90.8%. Mobile penetration is expected to surpass the 100%-mark in the course of 2011 and by the end of 2014 mobile penetration should have reached 119.0%.

Brazils Internet market is by far the largest in the region, with close to 60.0 million active users at the end of 2009. The market has expanded rapidly in recent years, with an average growth rate of 19.6% between 2004 and the end of 2009. Broadband has been the fastest growing telecom market in Brazil over the last 5 years, with a CAGR of 38.6% between 2004 and the end of 2009 HOT TELECOMs President Isabelle Paradis said. At the end of 2009, the number of broadband subscribers had reached 11.4 million and accounted for an estimated 48.5% of all Internet connections in the country.

In terms of broadband technology, 67.5% of broadband customers connect using ADSL, 27.5% use cable modem and the remainder use wireless satellite and radio frequency options. The number of dial-up subscribers is continuing to grow, albeit at a slowing pace, however this is set to change from 2010 onwards, when the number of dial-up subscribers is expected to start decreasing.
