Samsung and Sony Launch Wi-fi Only Devices to Rival...the iPod Touch?
Four years later, Samsung and Sony are trying to re-create that feeling somewhat on Android. Sony launched the Android Walkman at IFA in Berlin, where PCMag managing editor Wendy Sheehan Donnell got some hands-just in time with what she described as an "Android-based Walkman music player" running on Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread. No release date or pricing info were given then. Click on the slideshow below for her hands-on photos.
Meanwhile, Samsung announced today out of London the Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi 3.6, a lightweight, Android "multimedia device" that connects through Wi-Fi only.
Its specs and looks have been drawing comparisons to the iPod Touch. It features a 3.6-inch screen, 1GHz OMAP processor, 2-megapixel rear-facing camera with LED flash, and VGA front-facing camera, Bluetooth, and Android 2.3, or Gingerbread. Instead of a SIM card, users will simply make calls over Wi-Fi using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services like Google Talk or Skype.
Also at IFA, Samsung added two more members to the Samsung Galaxy family: the 7.7-inch Galaxy Tab and the 5.3-inch Galaxy Note smartphone. Click on the slideshow below for more images.
