Skype publishes iPhone video chat document
It appears that VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) provider Skype, who has had a run of bad luck lately, accidentally published and at that time quickly removed a help document that seems to confirm Skype video calling on the iPhone.
The FAQ document states that video chatting will be supported on iOS 4.0 or later iPhone or iPod touch devices and will work over both Wi-Fi and 3G wireless data connections. Apple's own Facetime only works over Wi-Fi connections at this time. The FAQ states that the application will support both forward and rear facing cameras, and that it will be easy to switch between the two while a call. Windows and Mac Skype users will be able to share their desktop display with iPhone Skype users, now iPhone users will not be able to share their phone displays.
The timing of the flub suggests that it is quite possible that we will see Skype video calling on the iPhone at CES then week. A screen shot of the FAQ page can be found at RedmondPie.com.
Some sites have claimed that there was a Verizon logo on the page, suggesting that this would be for a Verizon iPhone, however we've not seen any proof of that so far. It would not be a real shock, although, since the Verizon iPhone is expected to be announced in Q1 of 2011, and Skype and Verizon have worked very closely with each other in the recent past.
