
SRJC ready to reinstate sabbaticals
As a business owner, Call said sabbaticals are a benefit he couldn't afford for his employees and expressed concern whether the college receives a return on its investment. Some faculty take sabbaticals soon earlier retiring, making it difficult to see how their experience enriches the school, he said.
Doug Roberts, SRJC's vice president of business affairs, said it costs about $22,500 a semester to pay for a part-time teacher to cover an instructor on sabbatical. The 13 sabbatical requests earlier the board Tuesday would result in absences for 16 semesters, costing roughly $360,000 in replacement costs.
