Staying in touch
Technology known as Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, can be your cheapest option. In some circumstances, calls are free. But there are catches.
First, you'll need web access, whether it's through a smartphone or a computer. You also need a fast, reliable connection. Which means you'll be fine in Montreal, not so good in Mongolia.
Aside from cost, a big attraction is video. With cameras and microphones built into many devices these days, showing off those palm trees waving on the beach can be a cinch.
Pre-paid calling cards can deliver hefty discounts for overseas calls. You buy a card with a set amount of credit that you can use with a landline or mobile, then enter a (lengthy) access code and a PIN before dialling your number.
