The $1800 global roaming experiment

I didn't buy a local SIM. I haven't subscribed to any VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service. I just want to use my phone the way the phone companies want me to. My phone is designed to keep me connected and I of the same type. I like it a lot.

I'm not saying roaming should be free — not anything like it. I value roaming and it's changed the way we can do business when travelling.

Indeed it is, however "bill shock" has been around for years, with countless numbers of "victims" being reported by the IT and mainstream media. As long ago as 2003, Brislen himself warned that it posed a risk to users of Xbox Live who might download too much from the internet.

Survey on global roaming charges

ZDNet Australia ran a survey on global roaming charges, which showed that users are fed up with the high costs involved with using phones overseas.

While roaming and overage costs remain high, you can use a free app called Telicost from Anomalous Networks to monitor these on your device. Enterprises can as well use an upgraded version to monitor pooled plans and groups of corporate users. Consumers can download for free for personal use at www.telicost.com

So i recently went overseas for two weeks. For 90% of the time, my phone was off. I received 2 calls, and made 5, and had the data off.My partner as well made a similar number of calls.For me, Telstra charged my work $230 for the priveledge.My partner who is on an Optus cap plan paid $40. Slight difference
