He as well hinted at a bump in Microsoft's revenues for the 2011 fiscal year, which ends June 30. Revenues are expected to be released on July 21.

(That's likely operating revenue, notes seattlepi.com. Microsoft reported $62.5 billion in revenue and $18.8 billion in net income in fiscal year 2010.)

The CEO as well addressed what he sees as the most important research innovations: touchscreens and voice recognition, Kinect-like motion sensing research and cloud computing.

BDO's Innovation and Life Sciences practice conducted the fourth annual Research Outlook Survey, which examined the opinions of 100 chief financial officers at leading research companies. The findings suggest the tech industry recovery is at length swing - R&D and operational expenses are returning to pre-recession levels, and hiring and salary levels are as well bouncing back. As competition heats up, tech companies are taking a closer look at market share and turning to M&A to expand service offerings and drive strategic growth in 2011.
