
Tk 6,446cr projects taken to modernise telecom, JS told
The government has taken seven mega projects involving Tk 6, 446 crore for modernisation and improvement of telecommunications sector in efforts to build "digital Bangladesh," a major electoral pledge of the ruling Awami League.
He also said a laptop at a cost of Tk 10,000 only will be available in the market within next six months. Issuance of license for VoIP business will begin from coming November, he added.
The mega project includes setting up next generation network (NGN) based telecommunications network at a cost of Tk 1725.39 crore, setting up broadband wireless network at a cost of Tk 549.17 crore, improvement of optical fiber cable network at 1,000 union parishad at a cost of Tk 759.87 crore, expanding the internet information network at a cost of Tk 290.65 crore.

The other mega projects involving Tk 1909.67 crore was taken to introduce 3A network and expanding of 2.5A network to improve services of Teletalk, the only state-run mobile phone company.
In another reply, the minister said the government is considering to expand land phone up to village level through wireless high-technology (CDMA WLL) system.
