Treasury cashes in PABX for VoIP system

The Australian Government Treasury will before long be replacing its ageing private automatic branch exchange system with voice over internet protocol.

Department documents state that the Treasury's ACT offices will be upgraded to include a new phone, instant messaging, conferencing and telepresence system.

"The proposed software console is to meet the operator's requirements for accepting and dispatching calls, directory searching, call queuing and reporting."

The system overhaul will complete the final part of the Treasury's unified communications strategy, which is part of a wider move by the Federal Government to improve communications.

In November 2010, the Western Australian government introduced enterprise IP telephony services, supported by a scalable IP-based open network, to its Attorney-General offices.
