Velocity Network Upgrades Access Network
Zhone's industry-leading access solution to empower businesses with high speed Ethernet over Copper and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services
OAKLAND, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Zhone Technologies, Inc., a global pioneer in FTTx network access solutions, today announced that it has expanded its relationship with Velocity Network and Velocity.Net Communications Inc., a leading Internet service provider and competitive access provider in northwest Pennsylvania. Since 1996, Velocity has offered high-speed Internet access to thousands of local businesses and residential clients in northwestern Pennsylvania. Velocity's business clients will benefit from the expansion through enhanced scalability and network flexibility of Zhone's MXK platform.
In July 2011, Velocity deployed Zhone's industry leading MXK⢠as its multi-service access solution for business VoIP and high speed Ethernet-over-copper services in Erie, Pennsylvania. With Zhone's MALC⢠multi-service platform already deployed in its network, Velocity needed a solution that would seamlessly interoperate with the existing network with no adverse impact to their service quality. Zhone has successfully positioned Velocity to offer a wide range of advanced services to their customers. Zhone's MXK is currently deployed and supports asymmetrical digital subscriber line and symmetrical high bitrate digital subscriber line Ethernet in the first mile services in Velocity's network.
"Flexibility and performance were critical components in our decision process for the access platform," noted Matt Wiertel, director of business development, Velocity. "Zhone offers the most flexibility with its fiber and copper cards, and we have been in the extreme pleased with the performance of our existing MALC. With the addition of the MXK, we will be able to serve a larger segment of the Erie region and offer increased bandwidth to our commercial customers."
The unprecedented density offered
The unprecedented density offered by Zhone's 8-port GPON cards within a very small footprint was particularly appealing to Velocity. The MXK's 460 Gbps backplane, 28 Gbps uplinks and Terabit switching capacity were additional factors in its ultimate decision as Velocity looked to expand their network.
"Our clients range from global carriers with national coverage to rural operators with local reach, and Zhone is focused on managing each relationship with ease and efficiency. Every customer needs growth flexibility," emphasized Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer for Zhone. "We are delighted to expand our relationship with Velocity and know that this deployment will strengthen their current - and future - business customer relationships in the Pennsylvania community."
Zhone has deployed over 1,350 of its fully redundant, carrier-grade all-IP MXK platforms with more than 100 service providers in more than 40 countries. Featuring industry-leading density, scalability and switching capacity, the MXK is the industry's first terabit access concentrator and provides non-blocking capacity of up to 3,600 100 Mbps GPON subscribers or 360 1G active Ethernet subscribers.
