Wireless Innovation Forum Adds Seven New Members in First Half of 2011
The Wireless Technology Forumâ¢, a non-profit international industry association dedicated to driving the future of radio communications and systems worldwide, today announced the addition of seven new member organizations. These new members bring a broad base of experience in Software Defined Radio, Cognitive Radio and Dynamic Spectrum Access technologies in diverse markets at levels of the wireless value chain spanning from technology labs to telecommunications equipment manufacturers:
MIPS Technologies is a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital home, networking and mobile applications. MIPS has long been known as the embedded processor leader in digital home products just as DTVs, set-top boxes, Blu-ray players and WiFi routers. Its leadership position in high-performance processing for multimedia and networking applications, and its 'Android on MIPS' initiative, are enabling the company to expand into other high-growth markets just as mobile products. The MIPS architecture is supported by a broad ecosystem of tools and software, and offers performance, power and cost efficiencies that provide differentiation for applications and baseband processing, connectivity and other areas. MIPS-based mobile devices including smartphones, tablets, LTE (Long Term Evolution, latest standard in the mobile network technology) PC modems and e-readers are now shipping around the world.
Leader in networking markets
"As a leader in networking markets and an emerging player in mobile applications, MIPS Technologies is pleased to join the Wireless Technology Forum. Since our processors are an enabling research for software defined radio and cognitive radio in baseband modems for mobile phones, PC modems, wireless basestations and other products, we are excited to be a part of this innovative organization. We are seeing increased interest and traction for the MIPS architecture in baseband processing because of unparalleled technologies just as multithreading, which provides much lower latencies and improved user responsiveness," said Manuel Uhm, MIPS Technologies' Mobile Marketing Director, and Chair of the User Requirements Committee and Member of the Board of Directors for WINNF.
Adaptrum is a Silicon Valley-based startup developing wireless technologies and market-based mechanisms to enable new multi-use network infrastructure/services to meet the growing wireless broadband demand.
SecureComm, Inc. provides systems engineering and software development for secure communications and cryptographic systems. SecureComm specializes in SDR systems for the defense industry.
"Over the then 5 years soft modem research is predicted to become mainstream for volume applications just as cellular handsets. The Wireless Research Forum provides a focal point bringing at the same time companies and institutions with a common interest in the advancement and application of soft modem research," said Gordon Aspin, CEO of Cognovo. "As a business whose rationale is the commercialization of such technologies, we gladly recognized the benefits for Cognovo in joining the Forum and playing our part in contributing to the Forum's ongoing activities."
Established in 1996, The Wireless Technology Forum is a non-profit mutual benefit corporation dedicated to driving technology research in commercial, civil, and defense communications worldwide. Members bring a broad base of experience in Software Defined Radio, Cognitive Radio and Dynamic Spectrum Access technologies in diverse markets and at all levels of the wireless value chain to address emerging wireless communications requirements.
