A metaphorical storm was gathering, too. That 18 months in Guam was rough on the young couple. Cross-continental communication in the era earlier email and Skype was slow and far between.

"You had to go to a special booth on base to use the phone, and they'd tie you into the mainland or whatnot," Ken explains. "There's a guy sitting there during you're calling and he'd flip a switch and you'd have to say, 'Hi honey, I love you, over,' and he'd flip the switch. And she'd say, 'I love you too, over,' and they'd switch. That's the kind of conversation you'd have."
