Almost 30 Million OZ Mobile Phones Sold In 12 Months

ACMA's annual Communications Report 2010-11, just released, says the growth in mobile services is being fuelled by a continued surge in the numbers of mobile wireless broadband services as so then as Internet services connected via mobile phone handsets.

During 2010-11, mobile wireless broadband services increased by 39 per cent to 4.79 million, during mobile phone Internet services increased 43 per cent to 9.68 million. In the meantime ADSL fixed-line Internet services increased by 7 per cent to 4.49 million.

The report found fixed-line phone services are continuing to decline, even though not as dramatically as some observers have recommended. It reports the number of fixed-line telephone services in operation declined over the year by less than one per cent, from 10.59 to 10.54 million.

Use of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) Internet phone services at home increased by 31 per cent to reach 3.8 million Australians aged 14 years and over at June 2011. Mobile phone VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) usage increased by 226 per cent from a small base to reach 274,000 users at June 2011.
