Apple makes old iPhones 'unusably slow' on purpose
“Myerson was speaking to financial analysts at the Mobile World Congress on Wednesday. A questioner noted that Apple releases software updates for current phones, and was asking if Microsoft would do the same thing,” Rosoff reports. “Myerson didn’t answer, since Microsoft hasn’t even announced its at once mobile platform. However he did take the possibility to slam Apple.”
I think Apple ââ you’re right, you can download iOS 5 for iPhone 3G, and it won’t be usable, nevertheless it’s possible to install… It’s a great hardware sales tool as far as I can tell. Install this OS which makes your hardware unusably slow, so at the time you feel compelled to go back to the store and buy a new piece of hardware [And], statistically speaking, no Android phones get upgraded, none, ever. They have big bugs, they don’t even get patched. That’s what we’re seeing statistically out there. – Microsoft Terry Myerson
MacDailyNews Take: Terry Myerson is a liar and/or an ignoramus. iOS 5 has never supported iPhone 3G – which shows how much “Microsoft’s mobile head” knows about the subject of the phone that changed everything. We’re sitting here using an iPhone 3GS – a phone released in June 2009 – loaded with the latest iOS 5 and it works perfectly so then. Don’t just take our word for it, see here, here, and here.
In fact, iOS 5 is exactly coded for the A4 and A5 chips in iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, however Apple did not want to leave 3GS owners behind. The very fact that iOS 5 runs so so then on the to put it more exactly old iPhone 3GS hardware is physical proof that Microsoft’s Terry Myerson is either a liar and/or an ignoramus. Given the company for which he works, either case or both could easily be true.
Exactly. I remember that as in the near future as the 486 processor came out, Windows updates were brought out “optimized” for the 486, in other words than the 386, on which they became unacceptably slow. They pulled this trick several times, for the benefit of their hardware makers, so these could sell new hardware.
OTOH, Apple has in the past consistently brought out OSX versions that ran FASTER on older hardware. They prevented you to install on configurations that wouldn’t perform acceptably. As well, as a user, it was wise to not install on systems that didn’t have enough memory, however as long as this condition was met, performance was for the most part better.
As to iOS issues, I tell all my customers:- Do you know the difference between sleep and shutdown on an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad?- If they give me the blank stare, I assume no. As more and more non-techie people get iPhones and have no idea what a smart phone is, they need to be taught basic stuff.
Full shutdown
- First is a full shutdown.- Second, check all apps you installed to see if there are issues or updates with the new iOS version.- Third, if you are too lazy to do the second step, at that time remove temporarily all third party apps, reboot the iOS device and use it for a day or two. Is it better? Then and there it is one of those Apps.- If using iOS 4 or 5, understand the double click of the Home button to see what is in stand-by. If there is a bunch, quit all of them and see if that helps. Not always helpful however it has fixed certain things.- Fifth, rule out Internet performance vs just running an App that does not touch the Internet. It is amazing how the average person just thinks the Internet is just “magic” and should always be fast no matter where they are.
Apple is not necessarily all benevolent. They put out a firmware update that rendered the Blue and White G3 un-upgradable to ensure that this would not kill the G4 that was coming out to market. It took 3rd party developers that sold G4 processor upgrades for that model 6 months to undo Apples trickery. Apple as well promoted the G5 like the first 64 bit computer to hit the market with huge fanfare, but they never released any OS that would enable 64 bit processing of this chip. Now this could have been pure bad timing, nevertheless they did know that Intel processors were viable way previously they promoted the G5 since they had already ported OSX to that architecture way previously releasing the G5 Power Macs.
What would you to put it more exactly have – a device that runs a buggy OS that gets patched for a decade, or a device whose functionality improves over time with OS updates on a 12-18 month basis? Sure, you will in the end run into the problem that your older device is not up to the rigors of the new functionality. Nevertheless Apple often makes your devices more efficient and faster, up to the point at which they need to make a clean break with the past.
Microsoft used to advertise “minimum specs” for their software that were ridiculously low. Their software would run at a snail’s pace on a machine with those specs, if at all. This is a classic case of “pot calling the kettle black.”
The A list employees so Microcraps is stuck with B
Apple has already sucked up all the A list employees so Microcraps is stuck with B, C & D list reject employees who don’t know Jack and spout disingenuous desperate nonsense for Microshaft’s benefit. Too bad they only shoot themselves in the foot instead and look foolish and uninfomed. Emperor had no clothes and the Ballmer T. Clown no credibility.
Unfortunately, my sister in law installed it last week on her 3G and now her phone is pretty much unusably slow.. She is not a techie and was simply listening to the iTunes prompt that new software was available for her phone.
Yeah “MikeK” is likely JAAHL posting from his parents basement. iOS 5 is not -nor never has been- available for the 3G, and iOS5 runs fine on the 3GS
I think Microsoft ââ you're right, you can download Windows 7 for 1 GHz, 1 GB RAM, DirectX 9, and it won't be usable, however it's possible to install It's a great hardware sales tool as far as I can tell. Install this POS which makes your hardware unusably slow, so at the time you feel compelled to go to the Apple Store and buy a new piece of hardware [And], statistically speaking, no Windows PCs get upgraded, none, ever. They have big bugs, they don't even get patched. That's what we're seeing statistically out there. - Microsoft Terry Myerson
What is in fact their MO
You’re close what is in fact their MO. Is to price the OS so that a cheap ass PC that comes with it is nearly the same price as the OS it self so most people just land fill the old PC and purchase a new one, this is an environmental nightmare. Where Apple brings out their OS upgrades at a reasonable price and they by and large speed up the old hardware.
I have a 3GS and I can’t wait for 5.1. iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1 have given my phone a bad case of the jaggies and the laggies. Girlfriend’s is the same too.
“On March 9, 2011, the iOS 4.3 software update officially announced, which was the first iOS software update leaving out the support of iPhone 3G.”
But the he was right about Android’s lack of upgrades/updates. Tried to help younger daughter upgrade her Android ‘Gingerbread’ .. supposedly, according to the HTC tech-guy, to improve reception quality. It’s like Daedalus’ maze. What a joke, what a stupid pointless time-wasting joke! Easy to see why HTC has so rapidly gone from hero to zero.
My wife and I are both facing the same thing. iOS4 has turned my 3G into a slug, and iOS5 has done the same for her 3GS. Apple has forced the issue by threatening to kill our .Mac email addresses if we did’t upgrade and switch. They offer no downgrade option. Sadly, here in Canada, we just got them paid off and Apple saw fit to in all seriousness handicap them. Apple support flat out lied to us saying the issues with sluggishness were solved. We are not happy being extorted this way, nevertheless will upgrade, just to keep our email until we can afford to switch away from the Mac platform for good.
iOS 4 dramatically slowed down my 3G too, nevertheless I’m determined to get five years out of it cos I insist on maximum lifespan from my Apple gear.
Im running iOS 5.0.1on an iPhone 3GS, and it works very smoothly..you should try and reinstall everything it’ll make a difference.
and for the non-trolls… yes there IS a way to down grade to a prior iOS version. Apple won’t tell you how even though.. if you as a matter of fact think you need to down grade, look into Jailbreaking.and i know that if you have jailbroken your iPhone earlier and used Cydia, just opened up cydia counts, you can downgrade pretty much anytime.Myself I have no need/desire to Jailbreak anymore since iOS 5 hit. 99% of the reasons I jail broke my iPhone in the past, apple added in iOS 4/5 so i’m happy.
I’m running iOS 5 on my 3GS and it lags a lot, it’s to tell the truth worse on the core Apple apps like Messages opening.
Oh microshit, same deal with windows. You CAN install WIN98 on a pentium 90 with 512k ram, 100mb hard drive… however why the heck would you??
Is It a new Microsoft Hiring policy to hire crack addicts because whoever said this is smoking way to much crack. Windows phone is the absolute worst phone with the worst OS, it got so bad that i had to switch my wife’s phone back to a go phone.
The right thing
Something that Microsoft will never understand is that Apple always try to do the right thing. Perhaps there are time Apple missed this target, nevertheless not intentionally. At least in other words my point of view and what Steve Jobs said in an interview.Apple is accused to upgrade actually fast their phones to force customers to buy the newest one.I see a lot of phones form other companies upgrading monthly, disguised as different models. After all, Apple tries to upgrade iPhone once every 12 months to match contracts: If you bought an iPhone 3G, at the end of your contract, you can get the 4. Yet if you bought the 3GS, at the end of your contract you will get the 4S.Microsoft is like do evil, see evil.
precisely.. i have 6 dell xps 3.4 i7s with 8 gigs of ram and a high video end card with windows 7 installed on them. Talk about a lag when just clicking executables, or even trying to click in a window you rolled over and off and it disappears. The beautiful black screen previously opening and switching applications feels flaky in the best case. I wondering if it going to crash, hang in limbo or its just its normal operation.
My iPhone 4 requires less maintenance and runs smoothly day in day out without a need to restart to wipe hanging bits of .dlls and registry keys.
From my perspective, even the latest and great hardware turns into a sluggish and buggy experience on Windows 7. Being familiar with Windoze for over 20 years, it seems Microsoft could never ever built a competent OS let alone an OS experience as reliable as iOS.
The mobile phone business is full of liars
The mobile phone business is full of liars, cheats and ruffians trying to get your cash – and thats on a good day.Apple came along and fixed it. You get a new phone every year, real upgrades to software and a huge number of Apps, many of which are free.
Remember how it was Earlier iPhone? Thats where Winfuck will take you, if you let them.Android is useable, nevertheless its deep down junk.
Phone that does things
IF you want a phone that does things and has the very best music player and the gigantic eco-system of Apps, iTunes and support, you get an iPhone. The rest is GARBAGE.
The comments in this forum are hilarious. You’ve got the Apple zealots, the trolls, those that sincerely have a problem with their upgraded 3GS, and the Android haters! Thanks for the entertainment MDN!
Can’t upgrade my 3GS because it requires iCloud. Can’t go to iCloud for calendar sync until I upgrade to Lion. Can’t upgrade to Lion due to mission critical legacy PPC software required for my business and the $2k or more to upgrade Office & Adobe apps. I’m sure all SL support will dry up by the end of this year so I’ll just have to get off the upgrade merry go round. Thanks Apple. It’s been a great ride nevertheless I just don’t have the dough to stay on the path.
