Copyright laws
Facebook and Google are in protest because the bills would go too far and censor the Internet. The search engine and social network giants say SOPA is not needed because current copyright laws already protect creative content. However who is enforcing the existing copyright laws?
The Internet age
In the Internet age, protecting intellectual property is put in direct competition with freedom of speech. And in other words completely unfair. Protecting copyright in fact protects freedom of speech. It allows artists to maintain a living, control their own message and continue to create art.
Google, Facebook and YouTube say they are protecting freedom of speech, however they are as well protecting their business model. These billion dollar Internet companies should use their resources to increase security and take a proactive defense of copyright laws. If they believe Congress has it all wrong, let them set the example for the rest of the world.
