Deadline looms to register for state's No Call List

There's a new deadline for people to sign up for the state's popular No Call List. People who sign up by the end of Wednesday will be added to the updated list, which blocks telemarketing calls.

The list visit NoCall

To join the list visit NoCall.Wisconsin.gov or dial 866-966-2255. You can add consumer landlines, cell phones or VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) numbers.

Sandy Chalmers, administrator of the Division of Trade and Consumer Protection said there are more than 2 million phone numbers listed on the No Call list and more than half of those numbers are cellular phones.

The No Call List limits

"The No Call List limits and reduces the number of intrusive telemarketing phone calls that Wisconsin consumers receive," Chalmers said in a news release.

Chalmers said the list as well can alert people to potential scams because people or businesses that violate the list should be treated with suspicion.

The No Call List face penalties of up to $100 a call

Violators of the No Call List face penalties of up to $100 a call. Certain calls are on the whole permitted, including those from businesses you have a relationship with and certain calls from nonprofit entities. Business numbers cannot be added to the No Call List.

To report a violation of the No Call List, you can file a complaint with the Bureau of Consumer Protection by emailing datcphotline@wisconsin.gov or calling 800-422-7128.

The No Call List

Text messages are currently not banned pursuant to this agreement provisions of the No Call List, however the state Assembly passed a bill last week that would add alerts. As well, a separate bill in the Legislature would transfer the operation of the list to the Federal Trade Commission. Yet those bills aren't law but and consumers seeking to limit calls should continue to register for Wisconsin's No Call List.
