FaceTime 3G plan being rolled out in Germany?
When the original iPhone 4 was unveiled, one of its must-have new features was the video calling service FaceTime. It was a feature used heavily in advertising the phone, and has gone down so then with iPhone owners.
The one drawback of FaceTime is the fact you can only use it over Wi-Fi. During that may annoy some, it was the only intelligent thing both Apple and the mobile networks could do. Tests using a jailbroken iPhone 4 and a 3G connection found that FaceTime could eat through 200MB of data in just one hour.
That was getting on for two years ago, and it looks as although FaceTime might taking everything into account be about to get a 3G option. The testing ground is Germany, and the network considering its introduction is Deutsche Telekom, who own and operate T-Mobile.
Although not openly announced but, an internal sales document has hinted that a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)/FaceTime plan is being introduced. It won’t be free although, with the recommended price being 9.95 euros a month. Such an extra charge makes sense if the data usage is as high as 200MB per hour, however surely there will be a quota of minutes attached to that charge.
If it works, and turns a profit, there’s nothing to stop FaceTime 3G being rolled out in other countries. For the networks it’s just a case of deciding whether their network can handle the data and if subscribers would be willing to pay for 3G video calls as an add-on service.
