FCC Mandates that All Cell Phones Have GPS by 2018
The Federal Communications Commission has ruled that all cellular phones sold by wireless network operators must include GPS by 2018. The FCC is taking this step to ensure that cell phones -- and callers -- can be more accurately located when calling 911 while emergencies. According to the FCC, at the current adoption rates 85% of cell phones will include GPS by 2018 in any case, however the ruling makes in mandatory for all telephony services -- including those that use VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) innovation for voice calls. Right now, phones that don't have GPS on board are located via cell tower triangulation. The FCC did not define a sunset period for phasing out cell phones that don't have GPS.
