An investigation into the origin of the call is ongoing. Corbett said the call was to all appearances made online using Voice over Internet Protocol and was as well routed through a relay telephone service used by the deaf to type telephone messages.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the practice of making fake 911 calls is known as "swatting," and the point is to provoke a SWAT team or other emergency service response.
The FBI has been investigating swatting crimes all across the country since the early 2000s. Perpetrators can face federal charges for the fake calls.
