More North East firms are taking up cloud computing

THE number of businesses in the North East taking advantage of the benefits offered by cloud computing has rapidly increased in the last year.

Web search giant Google said the region saw a 167% year-on-year rise in companies adopting its Google Apps suite of web-based communication and collaboration tools. The increase in the North East was ahead of the national average of 135% year-on-year growth with many places in the region experiencing exceptional rises.

The field with an increase of 300%

Darlington leads the field with an increase of 300%, with Teesside at 161%. During Newcastle and Durham are slightly lagging behind, they however saw a rise of 158% and 154% respectively, showing evidence that cloud computing has reached mainstream adoption.

James Ramsbotham, chief executive of the North East Chamber of Commerce said: “It is fantastic to see North East companies leading the way in the take-up of cloud computing.

The many benefits the cloud offers

“These innovative growing businesses no doubt recognise the many benefits the cloud offers, giving them important tools to successfully compete in their industries.”

One company to step up its use of cloud computing is Middlesbrough-based Sound Training for Reading, which runs an intensive reading programme aimed at pupils who are falling behind in literacy.

“Our workforce needs to be spread across the country to deliver our reading programme in schools so cloud computing has been crucial. “The flexibility of the model as well means we can add more accounts as we recruit new staff, expanding at our own pace, during keeping overheads low,” said managing director Mike Williams.
